Forest Failure

Another important concern with some non-native invaders is forest failure through a lack of seedling recruitment.  Some invasive species that carpet a forest floor, like ivy or garlic mustard, compete so strongly that tree seedlings don’t survive.  Without new seedlings, the trees that fall down have no replacements waiting in the wings, and eventually the canopy ceases to exist.  At that point, a true monoculture exists.
